Overview
About Point Loma
West of downtown San Diego, you’ll find Point Loma, a luxurious seaside community that offers stunning views of San Diego’s skyline. Point Loma is home to the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and some of the best tide pools in San Diego. When the tide is low, you can see flowery anemones, crabs, mollusks and a myriad of other sea creatures inhabiting the reef. Just south of Point Loma is Harbor Island, which has some of the top-ranked restaurants in San Diego, including Island Prime and Coasterra.
The Point Loma peninsula has a couple of distinctive neighborhoods, with predominantly single-family homes. The Point Loma Village serves as the central hub for commercial and retail activities within the peninsula. An upscale neighboring community, called La Playa, is situated to the north of the original La Playa beach. La Playa is home to some of San Diego’s priciest residences, including bayfront homes with private piers for small boats.
On the west side, above ocean bluffs, lies Sunset Cliffs, which is known for its panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and beautiful walking path along the ocean. On the bay side of Point Loma, there are six small-boat marinas, as well as commercial docks catering to sport fishing cruises and seasonal whale watching expeditions.
Point Loma is home to the US Navy’s SPAWAR program, the US Marine Corps’ Recruit Training Depot (MCRD San Diego), and Naval Base Point Loma. Between these three bases, the Navy oversees approximately 1,800 acres of Point Loma.
In addition to Point Loma’s beauty, its central location, just minutes from Downtown San Diego and the San Diego International Airport, make it a hot destination for residents.

Point Loma is known as one of the few beach areas where you can still get a deal by purchasing an older home or investment property that you can fix up and gain value through equity and a constantly improving market.

Home Prices
in Point Loma
Pros of Investing in Point Loma
Since Point Loma is such a desirable location, home appreciation is always on the rise. If you choose to turn your property into a long-term rental, you will also have very little to no vacancy. With the help of a Point Loma property management company, you can generate healthy rental income from your property.
Cons of Investing in Point Loma
Since residential properties are so expensive in Point Loma, the price-to-rent ratio makes it almost infeasible to positively cash flow. In addition, homes are, on average, 36 years old. With older homes, there are often unforeseen maintenance costs, such as foundation issues, electrical issues, etc. In addition, homes closer to the ocean front typically require more maintenance.
